Design Achievement at the Margins

This foundational course introduces participants to the equityXdesign process and focuses on bringing the voices of the marginalized, such as students, into the design process. Participants will engage with key concepts in designing for equity, learn how to create transformative empathy, explore the intersection of COVID-19 and racism, and iterate on equitable design solutions.

Cede Power

Equitable design demands that practices and power balances change and evolve — that we redefine roles, revalue ways of knowing, and reassess the ways we reach decisions. During this third course module, participants will explore the relationships between the following design principles: Design at Margins, Start with Self, and Cede Power. Participants will also create a shared language to talk about race, equity, innovation, and design, and practice using that language in order to see and define problems. At the end of the learning experience, participants will be able to assess their own leadership stances, innovations, and the design process. Participants will learn to speak the future and design the future as they test their new equitable innovations on a small scale.

This learning experience is for leaders, teachers, edge finders and edge movers looking to expand their understanding and perspective of observed equity challenges.

Make the Invisible Visible

Relationships are often governed by preexisting assumptions that can perpetuate exclusionary assumptions and biased practices. By making them visible, we can assess their impact and create a space for reflection and repair. During this final course module, participants will explore the relationships between the following design principles: Design at Margins, Start with Self, and Make the Invisible Visible. In the course, we will explore metrics and data that will assess how our classrooms, schools, and organizations are becoming more equitable. Participants will learn how to have their equitable innovations grow deep roots and scale in their school and/or organization—they will learn to speak and design the future as they test their new equitable innovations on a small scale.

This learning experience is for leaders, teachers, edge finders and edge movers looking for new ways of integrating equitable practices and new relationships into their leadership and organizational structure.

What Our Students Have to Say

I enjoyed the collection of videos and sources, especially as they brought historical context into the conversation. I also really enjoyed reading through the Activity Feed in order to be able to learn how others processed the information and shared their takeaways from the lessons.

It pushed me to think in new ways about (in)equity, racism, my own privilege, and how these things all affect my work.

I am really impressed with the level of intentionality with which the course was designed. I found myself reading through a lesson and then thinking about it for days, weeks, months. While I may have finished the course, I feel I've only begun to do the work and that I could redo the course multiple times and still find new things to take away each time.

FAQs

  • At this time, all of our courses are self-paced. If a school or organization wants to go deeper, we offer debriefing sessions to help educators and professionals transfer the ideas to their leadership practices.

  • They are self-paced. There is lifetime access and we hope folks lean into this openness and return again and again as more surprises and connections are made.

  • We look for changes in how the person understands themselves, the ideas about the design principles, and look for surprises—because that is where the learning happens.

  • Mighty Networks is where we’ve created a virtual space for educators and other professionals to learn together and teach each other. We aim to innovate and facilitate meaningful relationships between members across role, geography, sector, and most importantly, identity.

  • Forever!

  • Participants receive a digital badge and 15 CEUs to showcase to their professional community.
