STILL MAKING OPPRESSION OBSOLETE

Design at the Margins: The AI Remix

We are living through a technological turning point. Artificial intelligence, extended reality (XR), and immersive tools are reshaping how we teach, lead, connect, and imagine the future. But technology is never neutral — it carries the values, assumptions, and power dynamics of the people and systems that create it. If we want a future rooted in justice and liberation, we have to design it on purpose.

This course is both a history lesson and a design lab. Grounded in the equityXdesign framework, we’ll explore how technology has shaped our world — from the printing press to the present AI era — and surface the liberatory and oppressive patterns that repeat across time. Using XR/AR gallery walks, participants will step inside this history, experience it spatially, and see direct AI-era parallels.

From there, we’ll move into hands-on exploration of AI and XR tools, asking sharper questions:

  • Who built it?

  • What data trained it?

  • Who benefits?

  • Who is harmed?

You’ll practice designing at the margins — centering the needs, wisdom, and agency of those most impacted — while experimenting with emerging tools for teaching, organizing, and leadership.

SHARE POWER, DESIGN A NEW FUTURE

Dream Expansively

Everyone has power, yet there is often a disconnect between who we are, who we aspire to be, and how we act. In this experience, we bridge this gap through live facilitation and the Cede Power design challenges. Participants will examine how oppressive systems—such as white supremacy, heteronormativity, and patriarchy—shape their relationships, leadership practices, and personal behaviors. This immersive experience includes interactive sessions and integrated design challenges to bring principles into real-world contexts.

These challenges help participants develop a shared language to redesign relationships in organizations to dream expansively, share power, and design a new future.

DESIGN FOR REFLECTION AND REPAIR

Build Inclusively

Relationships are often shaped by unseen assumptions that reinforce exclusion and bias. Uncovering these dynamics creates opportunities to reflect, repair, and rebuild with equity at the center. This learning experience focuses on cultivating spaces for reflection and repair through weekly design challenges and exploring the equityXdesign principles: Design at the Margins, Start with Self, and Make the Invisible Visible.

Participants will dive into tools and strategies for assessing how classrooms, schools, and organizations advance equity, using data and metrics to measure meaningful change. Through structured and live facilitation, they will test and refine equitable innovations on a small scale, learning to anchor these practices deeply and scale them effectively across their systems.

By the end of this experience, participants will be equipped to design spaces where all thrive—crafting new relationships and practices that transform leadership and organizational structures.

What Our Clients Have to Say

I enjoyed the collection of videos and sources, especially as they brought historical context into the conversation. I also really enjoyed reading through the Activity Feed in order to be able to learn how others processed the information and shared their takeaways from the lessons.

It pushed me to think in new ways about (in)equity, racism, my own privilege, and how these things all affect my work.

I am really impressed with the level of intentionality with which the course was designed. I found myself reading through a lesson and then thinking about it for days, weeks, months. While I may have finished the course, I feel I've only begun to do the work and that I could redo the course multiple times and still find new things to take away each time.
